PORTOBELLO ROAD BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Portobello Road Board 'was held at Portobello yesterday ; present—Mr H. Allen (chairman), and Messrs S. Edwards, C. Hall, P. Moss, S. Hinkley, and W. Bowles. The statutory annual meeting of ratepayers -was formally held, and the balance sheet approved. The Otago Motor Club wrote asking that representatives from the board attend a conference to l>e held in Dunedin, with regard to the different and modern, methods ;of road-making.—Received. A letter from the Otago Heads Road Board stated that that board had resolved to remove the gate at the, district boundary on the road leading to Cape Saunders at the end of three months from April 12.— Received.

_Mr Samuel Miller wrote drawing attention to the bact state of the Bay road in front of his property in Portobello, and asked that pipes bo supplied for hiih to put in to drain the surplus water off this portion. Ho also asked permission to erect a turnstile on the path leading to his property.—Granted.

Messrs W. G. Morgan and N. Minns wrote asking the board's permission to erect a barbed wire fenco as protection for tho live hedges on allotments 75 and 76, Wharf dale.—Held over till next meeting.

Mr A. G. Lewis wrote calling attention to the bad state of the road opposite Mr N. T. Stodart's byre.—Left in the hands of members for the sub-division. Tho secretary of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board forwarded the estimates for the ensuing year. The Portob Road Board's levy would amount to £340 lis 5d. —It _ was resolved to direct attention to a discrepancy in tho valuation. Mr G. W. Gill wrote asking the chairman to see that he received payment for tho clay taken from his property.—Aocount to be paid. Mr W., Rowland reported that in NorthEast Harbour the surfacemen had been busy building np the_ walls at tlio bridge. This had proved a bigger -undertaking than had been anticipated, as the major part of tho wall had to be rebuilt.* It was expected that Mr Henderson's contract at "Doon road would bo completed by tho end of the month. With regard to tho state of the •road to Mr Hooper's, the water had cut a racb about two feet deep right along the centre of the road, but ho had given tho surfaoenxm instructions to carry out tho neoessary repairs.—Approved. Tho board resolved to charge tho owners of a shed situated on tho road line the eum of £1 per. annum.
