A New Plymouth message announces the death of Mr J. B. Connett, formerly a member of the Taranaki Provincial Council, and for many years chairman of the Harbour Board. He had occupied many other pubho positions. He was 76 years of age.

As the annual session of the District Oonnnittee of the Otago branch of the Oddfellows Lodge was drawing to a cW at Kaitangata on Saturday a presentation was made to Bro. A, Sligo, who this year retires from the executive. Several speakers paid warm tributes to the splendid services rendered to Oddfellowship in- Otago by Bro. Sligo, and expressed the high esteem m vrhi^ T he is held. The Grand Master (Bro. W. Sullivan) then presented Bro. Sligo with a roller-top desk and with a silver cate-stand and Doulton ware for Mrs Sligo. The bretbern present loudly' applauded the recipient on rising to reply, and greeted him with the hearty singing of the customary lodge toast. Reference was made in the annual report of the New, Zealand Sheep Breeders' Association to the great loss the association had sustained by the deaths of Mr 0. W Eeid, the vice-chairman, who represented North Otago on the council, and of Mr Donald Grant, who represented South Canterbury. Sir George Clifford spoke briefly of the services that both gentlemen had rendered to the association and also to sheep breeding. Those present stood as a mark of respect to both the deceased gentlemen. The death of another of Auckland's very earliest settlers occurred on Saturday, when Mrs Jane Young, relict of Mr W. J. Young, passed away at her Grange road. Mrs Young, who was in her eighty-eighth year, landed with her parents at the Bay of Islands at the early age of eight years. They left Scotland in the ship Royal Admiral in 1840, coming by way of Australia to New Zealand, She had an eventful life, for the family, having taken up land at Whangarei, were obliged to flee from that place during the Maori war. Miss H. Beattie, school mistress at Windsor School, who is leaving to 'be married, was tendered a complimentary social on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance in the local hall, Mr Geo. livingstone presiding. The eveuing was devoted to dancing and card playing, and at a suitable interval the Chairman referred to Miss Beattie'a many good qualities arid called on Miss Vera M'Nally, one of the school pupils, to present Miss Beattie with a purse of sovereigns on behalf of the pupils of the school and the residents of the district. Mr P. J. Duggan, head master, also spoke and Miss Beattae's departure.' She had, lie said, occupied her present position for d period of six years, and proved herself one of die best teachers he had been associated with. Mr N. Lorry made a suitable reply on Miss Beattie's behalf. An excellent supper was provided, and the dsiice, for which music was supplied by Miss Elliott, concluded shortly after midnight.
