MINING.
A few months ago the price of osmiriaium was £37 10s an oz, and prospectors lnado up to £50 a Week on the Tasruanian fields. Since the cessation of fighting there been a fall in prices, and in response to inquiries from the Tasmjanian Mines Department the Agent-general for Tasmania in London states that tho demand for the mineral has abated. Present prices range between £10 and £12 an oz. In America from £12 to £14 is being paid. DREDGING ,ON THE WEST COAST. iPw Umitsd Pbshu Assoc;!i'rton , ■ HOKETEKA, March 17. The Westlttsd Mining Syndicate's first aredgo started operations to-day in the Arahura Valley, near Humphrey's Gully and is working satisfactorily. The dredgo has been fitted with special machinery for the purpose of replaoing the top "soil back on the tailings, and thereby converting present valueless swamp . land into future grass lands. The syndicate, of which Mr David Ziman is a director, is having a second dredge dismantled at Ahaura for removal to the Arahura River to operate a short distance away from the present dredge.
