CITY COUNCIL REPORT

The following is a summary of the various committee reports to be presented at the meeting of the City Council on Wednesday night:— The Works Committee will recommend that authority be granted to purchase suiiicient la.nd on the eastern side ot Elliott street, Anderson's Bay, to widen the said street to 40it. The land in question is at present being subdivided for sale, and the owners are prepared to dispose of the portion required ior ihe widening at the rate at which the adjoining sections are sold by auction, with p, proviso that in any case the amount is not to exceed £125. The area involved is 13.13 poles, and the only alternative is for the council to accept dedication from the owners of land sufficient to widen the street 33ft from the centre of the present roadway. Tenders for annual supplies of horses, cartage, drivers, etc., have been recommended for acceptance from the following persons:—J. Weir, M. Stevenson, A. Ramsay, G. Purton, J. D. M'Curdy, Galder's Quarry Company, John Mill. Lambert Bros., Milbuni Limo and Cement Company, and M'Skimming and Co. The committee adds that the tenders recommended are the lowest in each case, but they show a marked increase over those of last year. The rates for cartage in particular show a heavy advanoe. In respect of the contract for the maintenance of public clocks, as no tenders were received, the clocks will be placed under the control of the city engineer, who has intimated that the necessary care and attention will be given by his staff. The Electric Power and Lighting Committee reports that the tender of the American General Electric Company for the supply for three 750 K.V.A. transformers for the Halfway Bush sub-station for the Bum of approximately £lto6, delivered alongside ship, Now Yor.':, has been accepted. AJlowing for duty, the cost will be about £2581, as against the next lowest tender of £2904- from the British Electric Transformer Company (Ltd.). Tenders for this material were obtained in London by direction of the council, and the prices cabled out by the council's agents. The Tramways Committee recommends that a donation of £25 be made to the fund being raisod by the Children's Hospital Committee for the provision of a Hospital and Playgrounds at Forbury comer. Tho traffic returns for the tramways for the fortnight ended March, 1919, as compared with those for the corresponding period of last year, are as follows:—1919 reocipts £3756 10s lOd, mileage 49,727 miles; 1918—receipts £33< 7 13s lOd, mileage 50.048 miles. The Finance Committee will report that tho application of the General Committee for a supplemental maintenance vote of £350 to cover the cost of the sanitary department's operations up to March 31 next, be at proved. Tho additional expenditure has been due to the general rise in cost of materials and wages, together with the unforseen expenditure in connection with the influenza epidemic. Authority has been granted to issue a further portion of the debentures in the public works loan to the vahio of £600 to cover the expenditure authorised by council to March 31 next. Tho debentures will be taken up by the renewal fund commissioners. Or Bradley has given notice of the following motions:—" (a) That the resolution passed by the council on March 5, 1919. granting tho tramways manager six. months' leave of absence on full pay, bo rescinded : (b) that the tramways manager be granted one month's leave of absence on full pay, and that his resignation take effect on the termination of that period."
