WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held at Palmer stan South on Satutday; present—a Messrs G. Clark (chairman), H. O'Neill, J. O'Gonnell, A. Aitchison, R. Matheson, T. M'Lay, J. Chaipma-n, and T. H. Pilbrow. Hie Inspector's report stated, with regard to the Bushey Riding, that vary little work ■was done in this riding for the month, owing to the surfacemen being engaged in harvesting. This practically, applied to all the ridings. In the Goodwood, Blue Mountain, Meadowbank, Dunbaek, Green Valley, and Macrae's Ridings general surface work was done.—Adopted. 1 The Eketahuna County Council wrote complaining of the loss of rates owing to the Land ; Purchase Board- purchasing land for settlement and leasing the land on' grazing right leases for considerable periods, during which the Crown refused to pay general rates.—lt was decided to endorse the complaint, and to write to the member, of Parliament for the district asking him to take action in the matter. A letter was received from the Waipa County Council advocating the adoption of a system of permanent'roads, and also suggesting that a tax should be levied on all motor tyres imported, for division between the local bodies who* had to construct and maintain the roads.—Received. ■ It was decided to endorse a 'motion forwarded by the Tauranga Hospital and Charitable Aid Board complaining of the insanitary state of Native pas. The Repatriation Office (Dunedin) asked for assistance in the repatriation of returned soldiers.—Tho opinion was expressed that vacancies should be given to such men wherever possible, but it was decided to reply that there were at present no vacancies in the employ of the council. The Whakatane County Council wrote asking for information regarding th-3 suitability of a motor lorry for metalling work. —Decided to supply the information. It was decided that the inspector should report at the next meeting of the council on the cost of constructing a light traffic bridge at the Terrace .Farm Crossing over the Shag River, and also at Jones's Crossing. over the same river. The inspector was further asked to report on the advisability of getting a road line through the properties of Messrs G. Coutts and W. M'Kcnney. .■'lt was resolved that 10 per cent, extra should bo added in tho case of all rates unpaid at March 31. The, tender of Mr M. Kitchen of 5s 6d per yard for breaking stone on Stoneburn road was accepted. It was decided to send notices to several ratepayers asking them to attend to the cuttinir of gorss on tho roads opposite their properties. The balance sheet showed the revenue for the month to be £250 19s l6d. Accounts amounting to £189 14s 9d were passed for payment.
