THE FRENCH MISSION
LETTER TO WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC ASSOCIATION.
The_ following letter has been received by Miss Stewa]rt, president of the Otago Women's Patriotic Association, from General Pau:—
"Dear Miss Stewart,—During my stay is Dunedin. I learned with the greatest satisfaction of the work which you and your devoted associates have been engaged in throughout the war. I.shall always regret that my doctor would not permit of my seeing more of Dunedin and bi the people who have worked eo well in the interests of French and , Belgian soldiers. ' "I have heard so much about your association that it is a delicate task for me to distinguish between individuals all of whom have apparently put their.hearts and souls into : such self-sacrificing work for>the - past four years. I feel bouSd, however,,, to pay a tribute to Miss Burt (your in- / defatigable secretary), and Mesdames Macfie, Theomin, and J. A. Johnstone, I understand that Mrs Macfie has, in addition to.' the work she has performed in -connection with your association, been performing a multitude of other self-imposed ; tasks, par- I ticularly in the interests of sick and wounded ' soldiese at the Dunedin Hospital.. t V." Although I was unable to move about-, amongst you I was keenly interested in the details of your work, and I marvel that a voluntary organisation should have been. able to despatch 8000 parcels, as well as * clothes and comforts, to British,* French, .' and Belgian soldiers and civilians each month. In the name of the French nation and, through the mission, in the name of ' France, I thank you. , "G. Patt, General."
