PALMERSTON SHOW

The thirty-eighth annual 6how of the Palmeiston and Waihemo County A. and P. Association "was held on the Palmerston Recreation Ground yesterday. The weather was boautifuly iino, and there was a good attendance ,although not up to that of prewar years. The show may bo considered successful, although there- was a falling-oil in tho number of entries, which is attributable to tho postponement of tho show from the usual date iu December, consequent upon the influenza epidemic. There was a decrease in the cattle entries, but tho greatest falling-off was in draught horse exhibits, several prominent breeders failing to put in an appearance. The absence of Messns Kenyon Bros.- (Merton) from the list of exhibitors in this section was a noticeable defect.—The show was well conducted, and a good deal of the credit for this must be given to Mr W. Murray (president), who had associated with him an energetic committee. Mr A. A. M'William had charge of tho secretarial arrangements, and ably fulfilled his duties.

Ayrshire cattle, which have hitherto been a feature at previous Pahnerston shows, had one solitary representative present—a cow exhibited by Mr Thos. Hewitt (Goodwood), which was awarded first prize in the aged cow class. Shorthorns were judged by Mr J. R. Mitchell (Weston). Tliey wore not numerous, and Mr D. J. Ross was tho most successful exhibitor. 'There were only two entries in the aged cow class, tho red ticket going to Mr Ross, and the second to Mrs J. Mills. The former was subsequently selected for championship honours. Mr Ross won hi two-year-old heifers, yearlings, and aged bulls, but in yearling bulls Miss Stell's entry won first prize and the championship of the male division. Mr A. Portis (Ardgowan) judged the Jersey section, which was one of the features of the show, although competition was restricted to entries forwarded by Mr and Mrs R. Riddle. Mr Portis was delighted with the exhibits which came under his notice, and considered that -the quality of the animals shown had improved greatly since he was at Palmerston Show last— some four years ago. He considered the champion bull shown by Mrs Riddle a splendid specimen of the breed. Mr Riddle took tho championship hi the female division, although Mrs Riddle's cow, exhibited in the class for "cow arid two of her progeny," was a particularly good quality animal, but now broken down in the pdder. Mr Portis also allotted the awards in the Friesians, j n which Messrs W. Nicolson and Sons were the principal exhibitors. The championship in bulls went to Messrs Nicplson's imported animal, which gained 'first prizo at the Philadelphia Show (U.S.A.) as a yearling, and has so far not suffered defeat in a show ring. . Mr Nicolson,. sen., states that two , heifers sired by this bull are now leading in a dominion milking test. The championship in cows went, to Messrs Nicobon's Duchess, which also possesses an unbeaten show ring record. Mr Thos, Hewitt gained two second prizes—one in aged bulls and the other in two-year-old all the awards went to Messrs Nicolson's herd. There was only one crossbred cow forward—an entry belonging to Mr A. Murray, which gained for him the red ticket. In the section, "any breed," Mr G. Dawson won in the. cottar's cow class, Mr A. E. Wright being , second, and Mr A. Murray third. In the class for "two best dairy cows" in milk, Messrs W. Nicolson and Sons had an easy win with tile ohampibn cow Duchess and her daughter, Mr R. Riddle being second, ' and Mrs Riddle third. '

Mr A. Matheson (Dunedin) judged _ the fat cattle, but his duties were comparatively light, there being only six animals forward, all exhibited by Mr E. Lefevrc. Each of the exhibits was awarded full honours.

The draught horse section, which was judged by Mr J. R. Mitchell (Wcston) was robbed of a good deal of interest through' the absence of Messrs Kenyon Bros.', entries Mr James Birtles, however, brought < forward some excellent specimens of the Clydesdale breed. There was only one entry in the aged entire A. E. Wright's Winsome's Glory—which gained .full honours. Mr Birtles showed two nice two-year-old colts, one sired by Nether Index, arid the other by Dunure Fabric. _ The former was awarded the coveted red ticket, and .was subsequently decorated with, .the champion ribbon. In the yearling colt class Miss Steel and Mr' Birtles were 'the only entrants, the red ticket going to the former with a Baron Everest colt, the second to a Baron Bold colt, bred and exhibited by Mr Birtles. There was only one brood mare forward, the entrant being Mr Birtles, which won the red ticket. Mr Birtles won first, second, and third prizes in the dry mare class, first honours going to Jessie Campbell, who is sired by Baron Bold, the second to Laura Patrick, by the same sire, and the third to Queen, also sired by the famous Taieri stallion. Jessie Campbell was awarded the championship in the female division. Mr Peter Martin won in the class for three-year-old fillies, _ with Kate M'Bride, who is from an Agitator mare by Baron Fyvie; second prize was allotted to Lady Talbot, by Six Talbot, the former being owned by_ Mr Birtles. The first and second prizes in the two-year-old filly class were won by Mr Birtles, the red ticket going to Gypsy Maid, and the blue to May Queen, both of whom claim Baron Everest as their sire v Mr Birtles also won in yearling fillies with a Lee Creek Per-fection-bred animal. Second honours went to Mr D. Kennedy, who exhibited a nice filly sired, by Winsome's Glory, - from ' a Macarthur mare. Miss Steel gained third honours, with a_ Baron Everest filly. There were no entries in the class for Clydesdale Horse' Society's medal, open to yearlings and two-year-olds. In geldings and learns (with the exception of yearling goldings, which was won by Mr James Cook), Mr Birtles took all the awards. Mr Birtles also took first and second prizes in the class for mare and two of her progeny. ; Mr T. Leedham (Dunedin) allotted the awards in the thoroughbred and light horse section. There were only three entries forward in :the former section, Mr. T. Johnston winning in the brood mare class. There were two entries in the class for yearlings, Mr R. Riddlo annexing the red ticket and Mr D. Ross the blue. ■• '■ Mr Andrew Aitchison's Capitalist, bred by Mr T. Ritchie's Royal Rothschild in the carriage stallion class, and in hackney mares Mr Andrew. Aitehison's entry beat that of Mr Ross. In the class for gelding or filly, three years old, the placing was Mr T. Johnston, 1, Mr Andrew Aitchison 2, Mr G. Wileox 3. Corrigun in the 12 hand class. There was _ only one entry forward in the pony stallion class, Air A. Aitchison being the successful exhibitor. The sheep classes were somewhat disappointing, competition in most of the sections being very much restricted.
