the Tasmanian Government for a supply of hydro-electrio power for the Mount Read and Rosebery mines. The idea of the Governmen officials is that the Mount Lyell company shall enter into a contract with the State for the construction of certain portions of the scheme, including the dam on the King River. The board is prepared to do this "if satisfactory estimates be arranged." Tho carrying out of the -work would mean the submergence, of tho iNorth Lyell railway for a distance of about six miles, and it is pointed out by the board that the Government would have to either substitute a ferry or a line round the lake so as to enable the company to have facilities for getting supplies of timber for its mines. To add to the easily available power resources, tho directors have taken stops to increase the storage at Lake Margaret and Lake Peter. By doing this it is expected that the company will bo in a position to supply the Mount Read and Rosebery mines with any power required for the flotation plant by the time that the company is able to make use of such power. Speaking of. the fact that the board is paying only 2s 6d per share dividend for- the year, Mr Kelly explained that the directors would have liked to pay a higher dividend, but they consider it necessary to strengthen the financial resources as much as possible just now, while so much of the copper produced remains unsold. The British Munitions Department also is selling off stocks of metals, and it is not thought likely that it will buy any more. That being so, the directors feel that less favourable financial conditions during 1919 must be expected, so far as payment for copper is concerned. The future price of copper also is stated as difficult to forecast; so, in the circumstances, a cautious policy is held to be necessary.
