MINING.
The directors of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at the annual meeting gave information additional to that contained in the balance sheet published some time since. The company ever since the war has had to face a shortage of labour, and consequently development during the past 12 months lias been more limited than usual. Mr Bouts Kelly, the chairman, states that the work done is giving improved results, as ore has been proved farther north than anything hitherto disclosed in the North Lyell mine. The No. 40stope shows that payoblo ore docs not go very far below the IOOOft level in the western section of thostopo, but farther to tho north the shoot pinches underfoot.strongly. Pkb>pecting in the Comstock lease is demonstrating that there is a fair tonnage of kwgrado material hero capable of being bandied profitably by the use of the flotation process. That method of treatment is also applied successfully to the low-grade siliceous ore of tho North Lyell mine, thus adding to the resources of the company. The staff of the mine is hard at work trying to devise a method of saving the sulphur from tho furnaces. Apparently tho problem is one of great difficulty, and the solution does not seem to have been found yet. The board has continued its negotiations with
