BURNS CLUB

The monthly concert of the Bums Club was given in the Early Settlors' Hall last night. Mr W. Brown presided. Tho Chairman stated that since the last meeting much had happened. In lie first place, they had to thank God for a. victory Tho great staying powers of our armies had rendered this possible; but the women of tho nation, too, had, by their untiring efforts, helped to bring victory to our arms. The boasted Gorman power was now broken, ajid her navy was lying in the harbours of her conquerors. In the second place, much sorrow had been brought to our land by the fearful scourge which had raged throughout the world. Ho then asked Pipe-major Grant to play "The Land o tho Lsal" in remembrance of those who had been taken away by war and pestilence In his address on " The Factors of Foebmaking," Mr T. J. Melville said that tho common expression that "poets are born and not made" was true, but that sometimes born poets did not have the opportunity to develop their talent Ho then snowed how tho environments of the great feoottisli Burns—had tended to shape the nature of his verses. Beside the environment of poets education helped lnis important factor was nowadays a matter of 'cramming' , ; but the education of Jiurns was a different process: it was a drawing-out process. Traditions and the love of ones country also had their effect on tho verses of a noet.
