ENGINEERING WORKS EXPLOSION
MOULDERS SERIOUSLY INJURED.

A terrific explosion occurred- at J. J.. Niven and Co.'s engineering works this evening. Jack Fraser (leading moulder), Mannix (moulder), M'Murray, and his son, aged nine years, were seriously injured, and there were several extremely narrow escapes. ,Thc force of the explosion knocked .ornaments off shelves in houses 500 yards away, and shook all the buildings within a jnile radius. The men were engaged making a big casting for the dredge John Townley. The weight of thg metal in the cupola was so heavy that the bottom, dropped l out. and the air, mixing with the carbon monoxide caused a general explosion. The iron staunchions in the platform, around the cupola were torn out, whilst the galvanised iron of a wall 40 yards away was twisted.
