SALVATION ARMY JUMBLE SALE.

SELF-DENIAL APPEAL. In order to raise funds for their social ■work, tho maintenance of their homes for children, etc., the various branches of the Salvation" Army annually make an appeal, generally known as the self-denial appeal, for assistance from the public. The South Dunedin branch opened its campaign yesterday afternoon, when a monster jumble 6aje was commenced in the Army's hall, in King Edward street, South Dunedin. Alarge and varied assortment of useful articles of clothing, produce, and fancy goods was tastefully arranged in stalls, and steady business was transacted during the afternoon. Major Gunn (divisional commander) introduced the Mayor of St. Kilda (Mr O. N. Scurr), who_ officially opened the sale. The attendance in the evening was exceedingly gratifying, and excellent business ■was reported from' all the stalls, while the tea-room recived extensive patronage until tho closing hour. The sale is under the charge of Captain Moore, who has set his heart on making this year's effort a record of success and judging Jay the promising beginning ' yesterday, there is little doubt that this laudable desire will be gratified. The_ lady workers are deserving of hish praise for the energetic manner in which they conducted the sale. Prior to tho stall-holders commencing operations in the evening an enjoyable concert programme was contributed by the North Dunedin City Band. The following are the stall-holders: Jumble stall, Mrs Rush; social 6tall (drapery and fancy goods), Adjutants Elliott and Baker; corps stall (drapery and fancy goods), Mesdames Moore and Williams; junior stall (toys, etc), Mrs Syder; sweet stall," Miss Churnside (representing Army Corps Band) • miscellaneous stall, Mrs Morris; flower stall, Mrs Moore; tea rooms— Mesdames Anderson, Grassland, Dickenson, M'lntyre, Grenfell, and Miss Bolton.

The sale will be contained to-day and to morrow, and an excellent concert programme will be given each evening.
