THE RAND MINES
A LUGUBRIOUS FORECAST. PARTIAL CLOSING DOWN HINTED AT. Praii Association—By Telegraph—Copyright Router's Telegrams. JOHANNESBURG, September 23 (Received Sept. 24, at 7.20 p.m.) The President of the Chamber of Mines referred to the serious position of the Transvaal gold industry. Of 49 contributing mines, six were working at an actual loss, and 15 at a small profit, which, however, standing charges turned into a loss. Under existing conditions, the end was very near. It would be a pity _ if the dosing of some mines was required to bring home the real position.
