EMPIRE THEATRE

A modern version of the mythological .Lorelei legend under the title of "A Modern Lorelei" was screened for the first t.me yesterday at the Empire Theatre As u. drama it is powerlul and beautituiiy produced, and nothing more need be said of tliu characterisation than that Frances Burnham and Tyrone Power are the chief actors. The story shows a modem and innocent Lorelei whose beauty arouses jealousy, hatred, and violence among her many suitors. Loreiei is ostensibly only a ushorman's daughter, but in reality sho is a well-born girl, kidnapped as a baby and brought up by her foster-father o a Seal Island. Pictro, a fisherman, and many others love her, and the former becomes madly jealous when a young gentleman named Dorian is cast shipwrecked on the island, and learns to love Lorelei. Pietro makes attempts to kill Dorian, but they are all frustrated, and eventually a search partv reaches the island, and Dorian and Lorelei leave their land of dreams for a fuller happiness. Interwoven with the interesting and dramatic story of the adventures of Lorelei and Dorian are some of the finest scenes ever depicted on the screen. A smoothness of action and plot carries the story to a beautiful ending, and in the introduced dream stories air interest :s aroused that makes the picture doubly at tractive. The final chapter of the serial "Who is Number One," a Topical Gazette, " A Lag's Biography," and the comedy "Stopping Out ■' are the supporting pictures.
