RECOGNITION OF BRAVERY
MILITARY GATHERING AT KEN SINGTON DRILL HALL.
A ceremonial parade was hold last night sit the Kensington Drill Hall for the purpose of allowing his Excellency the Gover-nor-bmieral (Lord Liverpool)' to present medals either to those who had won thorn or to the relatives of men who had " gone west without receiving the honours of the hold which were their due. The troops, Territorials and Cadets, mustered _in good strength, and made a. most imposing spectacle when lined up in the spacious hall. Colonel J. Cowio Nicholls was in command, luul Major Cooper was also present. The long galleries were well ,n w interested snectators. Ilie Governor-General arrived at 820 o clock and the parade stood at attention while the Band of the 4th Regiment played the National. Anthem- His Excellency was attended by his A.D.C. (Lieutenant Helmore). After insp*ecting the parade, his Excellency addressed tho gathering. Ho said that it was the King's command that ho should personally present, on his Majesty's behalf, certain military decorations and medals. The presentations were to be made, if possible, at a military parade, such parade to bo considered as a ceremonial parade, although the troops might be in held service dress. As in parades of tho kind tho extract from the London Gazette giving the reasons for which tho awards ware made would be read by a staff officer. J. he presentations were made as follow, the notices from the Gazette being read by Major Cooper: — MILITARY CROSS. Mrs Horwood, Bay View road, St. Ivilda, widow of Captain Alfred Ernest tlorwood, Field Artillery, in recognition of distinguished conduct on the' field." Mr A. Morrison, Kaitangata, father of the late Captain Malcolm John Morrison, Inlantry, for "conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty." During an attack upon a village ho led his company with great j-<£ lty i' TOaint *"ning direction und-or very dimcult circumstances, and when temporarily held up by our own barrage making the most skilful use of ground during his advance. Master Roland Justice Hill, Carroll street Dunectin, son of the late Captain Roland Justice Hill for " distinguished servios on the field."
Mrs H. Campbell, Cromwell, mother of the late Lieutenant C. J. M'D. Campbell (since deceased), Australian Infantry, "in recognition of gallantry and devotion to dutv on tho field."
Mrs B. Mollison. of Meadowbank. Uamaru, mother of the late Second Lieutenant Benjamin Mollison, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, " for conspicuous gallantry m action." Ho led his party with great courage and skill, penetrated to tbs enemy's support linos, where great loss was inflicted and five prisoners were captured. DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL. Sergeant R. Lepper, New Zsaland Rifle Brigade, "for conspicuous gallantry in notion." He rushed forward under heavy fire, and brought back into safety meii who were lying wounded in front 'of the faring line." All the recipients -wore warmly applauded on coming forward to receive the honours. Mrs Horwood was accomnaniod by her son, who wore the Boy Scouts' uniform.
Immediately after the presentation his l!-xcellency took his departure.
