COMMERCIAL.

Daily Tunes Office, Saturday Morning. / r supplies of American herrings in :: sauce and of dried fruits have arrived duxin* r the week. °

Supplies of. various brands of Australian manufactured cacoa are ooming to hand very - freely, and. are finding a ready market. It is understood that a supply of caustic soda is due this week, and that as a consequence -the local manufacturers of soap -will be able to supply small quantities again. An advance has taken place in the price of methylated spirits. ■ Supplies are very /scarce.

Bra-sgo is in veTy short supply. : A shipment of Big Tree benzine, motor epirrt, and distillate is due to reach this market early in October. Tlie prices will be 6d per case below those ruling foT the prei vious shipment.'

Soven-poitn-d bags of salt are now on the market, and are quoted at 25a per cwt. A parcel of English whiting, in 2cwt bags is due to arrive next week. Ton lots -are fluoted at £21; Icsb quantities 22s per cwt. : A shipment of Brown's maize cornflour has just. com© forward. Five-box lota aro quoted at 4jjd per lb; less, 4?d.

OAHARU MARKETS. (From OUR OWX corhmpohdeiit.) ~ OAMARU, Septefaber 21. With the 'exception oi a line of 150 sacks of .Tuscan, business in wheat has been confined to email clearing-up lots. Oets axe rarely seen on the market, and the only sale on behalf of growers reported tins week has been a line of feed Algerians, lor which 4s 7d net was given at a country station..

Business in potato&s lias been limited to a few odd truck loads at £9 10s net at countrv stations, or £10 net delivered in Oarnaru. A fair amount of business has been done in stock, but agents report an inability to obtain supplies to go any length towardß meetingtiie demand, while the offerings of sheep and cattte at this week's sale were very small. A fair number of transactions in sheep are .reported, but these do not include any lines of outstanding, dimensions, sales being geneiolly in small lines. At a clearing sale yesterday ewes with lambs brought 22s 2d and 22s 5d all counted. Sales by private treaty have been made at the following prices: — Two-tooth ewes, S6s; mixed two and fourtooth ewes, 40s; ' mixed two, four, six, and eight-tooth ewes, from 34s to 37s 6d; mixed ' elx j and eight-tooth ewes, guaranteed sound, for March delivery, 31a 6d; soundmoirthed ewes with lambs for October delivery, 235, all counted; fat wethers, from 37e 6d to 435; forward wethers, 365; ewe hoggets, from 32s up to 355, according to quality j small ewe hoggets, 26s j wether gets, 255; mixed-sex hoggets, from 30s to 31a. A considerable amount of • buainess lias bean done in lambs for .forward delivery at 235, .while general sales in mixed linos have boeai madte from 20s up to 6d. No business is reported in cattle, which are wanted and hard to obtain.

The season is very backward, with frequent wintry blasts, and feed is making very little progress, while merchants report that tho demand for seeds of all descfipticms is remarkably slack.

SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) IHVKRCARGILL, September 21. The oats market is firm, and merchants aro Bow asking up to 5s Bd, f.0.b., s.i., for A grade Gar tons. It seems apparent that there axo not sufficient cats in the market to last until the new harvest, and soma holders aro of opinion that prices will go still higher despite tho competition from Australia, owing to tho difficulty in procuring shipping space. Very few oats are offering from the country] and for these 5s on trucks is being paidl for A grade Grartons, fit for either seed or milling.

Tho chaff market continues firm, with a. strong local demand for prime quality at £6 10s cm trucks, depending on tho distance from town.

The ryegrass market is rather quiet, witli tfte exception of retail sales to formers, who are .booking their orders freely. It is expected that in about six weeks there will bo a brisker demand from the North Island. During tie past fortnight a fair number of offerings have been, made by growers, who aie, however, disinolined to accept ruling rates.

The hemp market still continues weak, with ft falling tendency. There is absolutely no inquiry even rram manufacturers in New Zealand or Australia, and th© Londan market, though still high, has a weakening tendency. how fair is scarcely worth £35 on trucks, and high fair £36. Tow is in much the same position as last week, being worth nominally £4 10a on trucks for third grade. There is not, however, any business doing at this price. The stock market during the past week has boem fairly active, showing a firm tendency in pjjactioaHy all classes of stock, especially in sheaflu while a fair demand 1 has also sprung op far young oattle, a good number of the latter eiiaes having changed hands during the last fe*r days. Owing to a cold snap the grnes w not so forward as wae expected, otherwise we would have seen at la-st Win ton sale a greater firming than took place in all classes except ewes, which .have )-.<--cn wiling poorly in comparison with dry aa a good ma.ny farmera aid graziers v,-iuJd rather wait and buy all counted. Both iat sheep and fat cattle are in good demand, in consequence oS an inquiry from the north, unt urft many good lines are offering. ]>iiry rows aTe still soiling exceptionally well, this being duo to tibe expectation. of high jseio es
