NEW CREAMOATA MILLS
IMPORTANT NEW ZEALAND INDUSTRY. _It is claimed that the new structure at Gore for Aiessrs Fleming and Company, Ltd., manuiacturers ox Urcauioato and other well-known cereal loods, will, when completed, be the most complete plant in Australasia lor the preparation oi various kinds of cereal loods. bome idea oi tne importance of this industry may bo gathered lrom tho tact that in 19x7 considerably more than three-iiiths oi tho oat loods used in the dominion were manufactured by the Gore mills.
The new buildings will be entirely of ferroconcrete, practicany fircproot througnout, and when completed will iorm a notable feature amongi the buildings of Southland. '-Che total height will bo 80 icet, comprising five storeys, each of 15 feet. Tho whole of the outer walls, with tho exception of the structural piers, will be of glass, thus making the building what is known to-day as a "Sunlight" iactory, and every known device ior ample ventilation and general hygiene will be provided. The kilns and general milling plant will bo separated from the packing department by a fireproof curtain wall, provided with solf-closmg fireproof doors. The roof of both silos and mill will be of concrete, as also will be all the stair-cases and conditioning bins, while all spouts, conveyors, and elevators will bo of steeL
As before, the whole of the handling of the raw material will bo done automatically from the railway wagon to the storage silos, from silos to cleaning, grading, and conditioning plant, thence to the automatic ovens and cooling apparatus, through tho innumerable processes of hulling, and final rolling and dressing to the matic filling, weighing, and sealing-maohine, which turns out the finished packages. A special permit has been obtained from the authorities to import tho required machinery in view of its use for tho manufacture of foodstuffs and to replace plant destroyed by fire. The automatic weighing and sealing machinery will be the only plant of its kind in Australasia, and the firm is to be congratulated on its enterprise in installing such efficient machinery. So far as New Zcaland-mad-o food products aro concerned, Messrs Fleming and Company, Ltd., have proved that what can be done in other countries can be done here in the dominion.
