ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
(Per United Pbess Association.) WELLINGTON, September 20. Arthur Hansford, manager of tho Kairuru Marble Quarry, suppliers of marble to tho Parliamentary Buildings, died in the hospital last evening as the result of injuries sustained by a fall from a mail car at Richmond on Wednesday afternoon. He asked the driver to stop, but jumped off while the car was still moving and fell, sustaining a severe fracture at the base of the skull. Deceased was an expert at quarry work. His brother is one of the contractors of Parliamentary Buildings. A bricklayer's labourer named Patrick Ryan was killed to-day. He was working on some buildings being erected in Cable street, and it is presumed that he fell while carrying iron up a ladder. The deceased, who was married, was 74- years of age. TAUMARUNUI, September 20. A fatal accident occurred at Manunui today. A Maori resident named Matthews was carrying stones from the river bed for the Maori copper trail sports carnival, when his horse took fright, and the cart capsized on the deceased, killing him almost instantaneously. About 6.30 last evening a young man stepped off a north-bound Castle street car while it was in motion. Hie right leg was injured, and ho was taken into tlie Police Station, near which the mishap occurred. His name and address were taken, and he was released. At an inquest held before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., yesterday afternoon on the body of Mrs Janet Beat, aged 62 years, who was found dead about 6 o'clock that morning in bed a,t 7 Harrow street, whore she had resided with her husband, a verdict of death from exhaustion, following on cirrhosis of tho liver, was returned.
