. Speaking at the laying of three Isherwood keels at Walsh Island ,on September G, Mr Poynton (Minister Shipbuilding) said'that Walsh Island was the best of the dockyards that he had yet seen. "When he took charge of snipping the total number of men in the industry under his control ,was 42; now there were between 2000 and 3000, and they hud just started. Ho had placed orders for £2 ships, of which 27 keels had been laid. There were 12 shipyards working, and within a month 30 keels would be Eet down. Mr Poynton also announced recently that contracts had been let with Mort's Dock and Engineering Company, and the Clyde Engineering Company, of Sydney, for the making of 24 semi-Diesel engines for the wooden auxiliary vessels now being biult. Ho also further that the engines for the steel vessels biftng constructed would also be made in Australia. AUCKLAND ENTERPRISE. Some dissatisfaction exists in Auckland commercial circles over the fact that while Wellington has a direct passenger and cargo service to San Francisco, Auckland has none Representations were recently made to tho Union Company by the Chamber of Commerce with a view to obtaining an improvement, and the Union Company, in its reply, stated that the Auckland commercial comimuaity did not appear to have any reasonable ground) for complaint in regards to their service as compared with that of Wellington. Auckland, it was 'pointed out, had a monopoly of. the Vancouver service, which was carried out by two up-to-date steamers, whereas Wellington had for its service two older vessels and two smaller ones.. The South Island had no direct service to San. Francisco. In view of the depleted state of' its tonnage, and the importance in the interests <# all ooncerhed of making the m-cst efficient and most effective use of its fleet, the company was unable to holdl out any encouragement. in_ regard to the chamber's suggestion. When the correspondence came up for consideration at tho last meeting of the council of the chamber, the president (Mr Robert Burns) said that the allusion of the company to the Vancouver service merely drew a red herring across the scent. The cargo epaoe on the Vancouver mail steamers was allotted by the Union Company pro rata among the ports of the dominion. Though Auckland traders were allotted space in the San Francisco steamers, they had to pay the coastal freight to Wellington upon their exports. In order to secure space in tho Vancouver boats Auokland firms had to send to Sydney any cargo they wished to ship, andl get it placed on beard there. Mr S. A. jLonguet said that nearly all the space on tlie Vancouver steamers -was taken by the "New Zealand and Canadian Governments, and practically none was left for trading firms. 'Mr A. B. Robertson suggested that the San Francisoo steamers might make their final call at Auckland. Thai would have the advantage of easing the pressure on the coastal vessels, which were now over-taxed, and would entail very slight loss of time an the voyage. It was resolve! that an answer be sent to tho company embodying this decision.
