CONCILIATION COUNCIL

HAIRDRESSERS' DISPUTE SETTLED. _ Mr W. ll.* Hagger (Commissioner) held a sitting of tho Conciliation Council yesterday morning to hear a dispute between the Otago Hairdressers' Assistants' Industrial TJuion of Workers and the employers. The assessors for the union were Messrs J. G. Forster, T. Potter, and T. Veitch, and for the employers Messrs A. M. Hendy, G. M, Moody, and F. E. Hilliker. 'Jfoa union asked for a 48-hour week, the dai's work to cease at 6 p.m. on four days of the week, at 1 p.m. on the weekly halfholiday, and at 9 p.m. on the weekly late night. 'The minimum wagg) asked for was £3 15s per week, and demands were also made for the better payment of apprentices. The reduction in tho hours of work asked for by the union resulted from the demand to close at 6 p.m. instead of at 8 p.m. on three days of the week as at present. The employers put in the old award as the basis of their counter proposals. After a good deal of discussion an agreement was arrived at, the principal matters affected being the hours of work and ■wages. The hours of ceasing work were fixed as follow: —6 p.m. on three days a ■week; 8 P.m. on one day a week (except when a noliday occurs in such week); I p.m. on the weekly half-holiday; 9 p.m. on one night a week. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Evo the hour of ceasing •work shall bo 10 p.m., and during the six ■working days preceding Christmas Day work snail cease on threo night at 8 p.m. and one night at 6 p.m. During Winter and Summer Show weeks tho hours of ceasing work shall be as follows: —Threo nights at 8 p.m.; one night at 6 p.m.; and one night at 9 p.m. An increase in wages to £3 7s 6d a week was agreed upon. The wages of apprentices were increased to the following rates: First year, 10s; second year, 15s; third year, 20s; fourth year, 30s; fifth year, 40s. , The term of the new award will be two years, and it will cover a radius of 12 miles from tho Chief Post Office, Dunedin.
