After leaving school he engaged in agricultural pursuits with his father at Ranfurly. Later, when the Linburn grazing runs were opened for ballot, a member of the family was successful in drawing one, and he went to live on this property (Paerau), and managed it very successfully till his departure with the 31st Mounted Reinforcements.
