GALLANT RESCUES.
FROM SEA AND FLAME. DESTROYER COMMANDER'S HEROISM. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. NEW YORK, May 27. (Received May 23, at 1.10 a.m.) . The Navy Department relates a thrilling narrative of the rescue from the sea. and flames of the survivors of the Florence, which was destroyed by an explosion in a French port on the 17th April. After the explosion the surrounding water was covered with a mass of boxes of smokeless powder, which were constantly exploding. The survivors clung to wreckage, but could not reach the small boats owing to their being iammed by wreckage. The lifeboats were ablaze; the motor boat was jammed l and enveloped with flame, when Mr Haislip, commander of an Amerioan destroyer, despite the danger of explosion and the terrific heat from the burning vessel, drove it through the flaming wreckage, rescuing 34 wiho otherwise would have been doomed. The rescuers have been recommended for medals.
