CRIMINAL SITTINGS. Wkdnbsdat, MAY 22. I (Befor* Hia Honor Mr Justice Sim.) SHEFX. OlaretQoe Herbert Urocott (18 years of age) was called on for sentence on a charge, to which he had pleaded guilty, of theft At Oamaru. Mr YV. C. MacGregor, K.C., Crown Prosecutor, appejixed for the Crown; Mr Irwin for the acoused. Mr Irwin said the accused had been remanded to allow ot the probation officer's report coining to hand from Oamaru. It had alao boen suggested that the accused might reconsider ilia denial that he had ~ taken the money in the letter. His Honor: He seemed to regard it as ueoeaaary to tell only as much of the truth as he wished to . tell. Mr Irwin said that, in company with the boy's father, he had interviewed the accused, who had admitted to them that ho took the money from the letter. The envelope, he said, was not securely fastened, and when he saw the money he took it. His Honor said that the report of the probation officer was favourable. The boy's character had been good, and the probation officer recommended probation. The accused would be released on probation for three years. One condition, of his probation was that he must be of good behaviour and always speak the truth. He would also have to pay the costs of the prosecution (£2 8s) within one month. CTVTL SITTINGS. TIMMS V. HAMILTON. Claim £200, damages for slander. Mr Irwin appeared for the plaintiff, Arthur Henry Timms, of Beaumont, enginedriver ; Mr Scurr for the defendant, Thomas Hamilton, of Beaumont, flax-miller. The allegation on the part of the plaintiff was that the defendant in November last made a slanderous statement concerning him, to the effect that he had poured water on some dax to spite him. When the cose was called, Mr Irwin intimated that it had been settled on terms satisfactory to both parties.
