By Sentinel. THE DUNEDIN WINTER MEETING. Indications already point to the Dunedin Jockey Club holding a succcssful winter mooting on June 1 and 3. A fairly large number of visiting horses has already arrived on the scene of action, and at the conclusion of the North Otago meeting we may look forward to the northern contingent making an appcarance. Local stables will also bo strongly represenetd. as quito a large number of horses are in work at headquarters ;n view of their engagements at _ the fixture. No doubt owners and trainers are fully aware of the fact that the meeting will furnish a final opportunity for picking up a race before the curtain is rung down on the season at this end, and this should add extra keenness to the contests. The tracks are at present in good going order, and it is 'to be hoped that they will continue so until the meeting is concluded, as it only requires good weather to make the gathering an assured success. A PASSING THOUGHT. The present racing season has been a most remarkable one, because where many looked for disaster and a dead slump in racing, quite the contrary has proved the case. Fields throughout the season havo been maintained to such a numerical strength that it is obvious quito as many,' t if not more, horses are in training as in ' any other previous racing year, and this notwithstanding the high price of honso feed and the increase in the cost of running. Money is plentiful, despite the high cost of living and the extra calls on the pocket which have to be heard as a plain duty, which it is pleasing to record is, aa a general rule, liberally responded to by sportsmen, of whom quite a number havo made substantial donations to the various patriotic funds. Several have donated handsome stakes won by their horses, and no doubt others will continue to follow such a sportsmanlike lead. It must be said, however, in passing, that owners of trotters and pacers do not seem to have made themselves -very concpicuous with donations of 6takes won by their horses. Perhaps they do their good work without drawing publio attention to the matter, but in the interests of the sport a little publicity would be quito yermissible and pardonable. As "far as light harness racing is concerned, evidence is growing stronger and stronger as to its undoubted popularity with the puhlic, and like the puxent sport, has bocome recogw niscd as not only a national pustimo, but also a groat national industry. —L. Hegarty will have the ride on Joanno t in his ro-ce at Oamaru. — The White King is looking well, and shaping fntivfactorily in his work. — The trotter Peter M'Millan is booked to join A. Prmg'.o's stable at Ashburton. — Magdala is shaping nicely in his work at present, and shows promise as a hurdler. Ccrnilns gave a plcaeinjt disolay ovoi: the hurdles at Wingatui on Monday morning. — The imported colt Fleet ham, who is engaged at Wingatui, is improving in his tracH
