SHORTAGE OF SHIPPING
EFFECT ON REINFORCEMENTS. ' (P*b Ukited Passs Association.) WELLINGTON, May 2L On being asked if the shipping shortage would affect tho increased proportion 'of men to be 6ent from New Zealand in the next few months, Sir James Allen stated: "Wo shall not bo ablo fully to fulfil our obligations for lack of shipping space. The Imperial authorities asked us to increase our reinforcements until tho end of August. Wo shall not be ablo to transport our full quotas, but will get pretty near them." Tho Minister was then asked if tho reinforcements will then drop to normal, and he replied: "I don't think there's any doubt about it." The temporary increase was about 800 infantrymen per month. (Fbok Oub Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, May 21. The Acting Prime Minister's announcement has not been unexpected among those in touch with the recruiting and embarkation work. All the men who are now being medically examined axe being given leave until tho September draft is mobilised. Nono of the second lot of tho B class can go into camp before this date, and most of them may lie a month or two months later. If tho old rate is to be reverted to lists of 10,000 balloted men will not be necessary every month. Tho question has been discussed by tlio department, however, as to whether it will not be a wise policy to call up the married men as soon as they can be conveniently dealt with, and to havo them medically examined. It mav bo, therefore, that for some time medical examinations will be in excess of recruiting requirements.
