FORTY-SECOND REINFORCEMENTS.

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT. In accord with its usual custom, tlic committee of the Otajjo and Southland Women's Patriotic Association entertained the men of tho Forty-second Reinforcements and their friends .it a social in the Early Settlers' Hull last night. The first part of the evening was dtevotfd to card games at the tables that were plentifully provided. Brisk and bright music was supplied by Mr Percy Beaumont's band, and there was a large attendance, including a considerable number of returned men. During tho evening the Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) spoke a few optimistic words to tho men. They might not be in time to sharo in tho final -victory, lie said, for lie believed tlio tide was now turning and tho German army would soon crumble. They could send them away with the confident hope that the dawn of tho greatest and most glorious day wo had ever seen would soon be upon us. Miss M. Downie Stewart (president of the Otago and Southland Women's Patriotic Association) said' she had been asked by the association to give them their message of farewell as they set out to take thc.r placo side by side with those magnificent New Zeslanders that wo were already so proud of. They felt there was little they could sav because their hearts were too full. But women wero deeply conscious of all the men were giving u;> and sacrificing willingly and cheerfully in order that they might be able to have a sharo in defending those things that we. as a nation, held most dear. Women marvelled as thev saw the courage, tho heroism and tho self-sacri-fice of tho men, and women wanted to help m whatever way thev could bv showing an absolute trust and an unquestioning patience tlirough all their anxiety for them, •tor ages past tho very foundation of the Briton's soul had been in his emphatic refusal to admit that he had been, was, or even, could' be beat&n As one of our lcad<!mi s ' a^9smen Home had said recently, ihore is one motto that each of us, man and woman alike, has to keep in front of him if we are going to win the war, and win it we must. That motto is 'Stick it out, and we must stick it out, whatever the cost, whatever the privation." Sometimes, perhaps, when things wero looking dark tor them, it might help them to know that the women wero following their doings with pride, wero watching with tile deepest appreciation the way in which the men were sticking it out." And it might help tliem, too, to remember that their courage and loyalty were giving fresh heart to the women and strengthening their faith and! loyalty in these testing days. There came dark* days even to the most optimistic, but because we knew what our men were made ot and because we saw what they were daily achieving wo could keep our eyes on the goal and know that all would vet be well. The men of the Forty-second Reinforcements carried with them the earnest good wishes of every woman in the association, and not only their good wishes but their hopes and prayers would follow them w" d 'Y- . Mi -, ht Ciod fio with them anri bless them in their great work. Supper was handed round at an ea.rlv hour and the floor was then cleared foi an interval of dancing.
