COMBATTING THE MENACE. 12 U BOATS SUNK LAST MONTH. Auitralian and N.Z. Cablo Association. LONDON, May 18. (Received May 19, at 5.5 p.m.) It has been stated in official sources that 12 U boats were sunk in British waters by British and American destroyers during April. Two other U boats are also known to be sunk—one while attacking a convoy going to Holland; the other rose up between two American transports carrying troops to .France. A torpedo missed the transport by a few feet, and the U boat was destroyed by depth bombs fired from the destroyer. FRANCO-AMERICAN OPERATIONS SUCCESSFUL. PARIS', May 17. (Received May 19, at 5.5 p.m.) Admiral Wilson, commanding the American naval forces in French -waters, states as a result of Franco-American anti-submarine warfare there were no losses through enemy torpedoes during February and April 'in waters in which American warships were operating, as compared with 34 in October, 1917.
