Quito a gloom was* cats over Clinton and the surrounding districts when word wne received that Lieutenant A. H. Charlton, son. of Mr William Charlton (blacksmith), had been killed in action in Franco on February 3. The doeeas-ed was born at Clinton, and was educated in tho local school, afterwards learning tho blacksmithing trade with his father, andl eventually becoming a partner in. tho business. Ho was very highly res-pected by all who knew him, and tcok a keen interest in many local institutions. He was a member of the local Oddfellows' and Masonic Lodges, and passed through all the chairs in each. Ho was a well-known figure on tho football field, where he gained the regulation of being the bast forward player in South Olago. He was the leading player in the local tennis club, and took part in championship meetings at Dunediu and Invercargill. He was an excellent shot on the riflo range, and won the local championship several times, also cn-e at Oamaru some years ago, ojks was nmtier-up at Invercargill and Gore quite recently. He joined the Popotunoa Rifle Volunteer Corps at its inception 16 yea.rs ago as a sergeant, and afterwards received his commission as li«utsnant, which lie still held at the date- of his enlistment in December, 3916. He left New Zealand with the 28th Reinforcements, but was afterwards transferred to tho New Zealand Rifle Brigade.
