The Swedish Government recently announced that during the three years of the war Sweden has lost 12 per cent, of her merchant fleet, or more than 100,000 r.et register tons. Fifty-two steamers and 39 Bailing vessels have "been destroyed by German submarines, and 32 steamers and three Bailing vessels have struck mines. Five steamers and three sailing vessels have, after capture, been confiscated. The Panama Canal Authority has recently completed at its Balboa shops two interesting motor vessels, whioh are intended to act as supply boats to the sliips using the great inter-ocean waterway. The vessels are 85ft long, by 20ft beam (moulded), by 9ft depth - (moulded), and displace 140 tons at their load draught of sft 6in. Their designed speed is seven miles an llbur, but under moderate load they have done as well as nine miles an hour. They are singlescrew ships, their propelling power being in a Niesco Diesel engine developing 120 h.p. at 350 r.p.m. Tho motors, which are 6tartod by means of compressed air under a pressure of 9001b per square inch, run on a low grade of fuel oil. The auxiliary machinery consists of a 24 lup. Palmer petrol engine driving an air compressor, a dynamo of three kilowatts capacity, a centrifngal pump, and a bilge pump. The fuel tank is in the forepeak, and has a capacity of six tons. As the is a gallon per mile, the vessels have a cruising radius of about 2000 miles.

The new marine insurance scheme adopted by the Imperial Government is determined to be made a profitable business, even if it is found necessary to pay for it by deductions from other departments. For instance, tho rate of requisitioned liners has been increased from _ 5 to 9 per cent, for 91 days, but, stales Fairplay, judging from the speech dealing with reduced losses by submarines delivered by Mr Lloyd George about August, there is no- justification for increasing the rate by 80 per cent. Tho effect, however, will bo that the profit on the running of the requisitioned liners will bo reduced materially. The adoption of the new rates may result in a loss being shown on some voyages, and these losses will have to be financod by tho managers until they can secure repayment from the Government.
