Kitto, member of tho Victorian Association of Spiritualists, jravo tho tilth of a series of addresses under the auspices of tho Dunodiii Spiritualist Church to a fairly largo audience in Smith's ILill last night. Tiio speaker's subject was "-Occult Phenomena." Ho claimed that psychic powers wero latent in every person, and clairvoyance or mesmerism might bo acquired just as ono might loam to play tho violin, elocution, or physical culture. But it was totter and safer for people to work at tho development of character so as to lit themselves for tho higher paths of occultism and allow tho latent powers to unfold in duo course. Sister Army Rhodes gave a scries of independent messages that wero appreciated. Mr A. Watters, president of tho local church, occupied tho chair. At the Salvation Army yesterday there was much interest evinced in tho proceedings in connection with tho departure for Auckland of tho City Corps ofliecrs, Adjutant Smith and Ensign Jiirks. The morning meeting was de-voted to holiness and consecration. Tho afternoon was tho annual commissioning of tho local ofiiccrs, bandsmen, and young people's workers. This was a very enthusiastic function. Ton cornrades received distinctive long-sorvieo badges for continual local officorship for terms ranging from 10 to 20 years. Perhaps the most interesting part of tho proceedings was the public enrolment of six new soldiers, each of whom, was tendered a hearty reception. At tho night meeting Staff-captain and Mrs Macauley, who aro proceeding to Wellington, woro given on appropriate farewell. Adjutant Smith bespoke a kindly rceoption for tho incoming officers, Adjutant and Mrs Avenal. who have been stationed in Christ-church for the last two years, and who will l>o tendered a reception on Thursday night, together with Adjutant and Mrs? Bear, who como to fill tho positions vacated by Staff-captain and Mrs Macauley.
