WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

The ordinary meefing of the Wazhemo County Council -was held on Saturday; present—Crs Mathieeon (chairman), Pilbrow, Chapman, M'Lay, Aitcheaon, O'Gonncll, O'Neill, Mfller. Prior to the ordinary business being proceeded with, the Chairman referred to the sudden death of Mr Alex. Miionnan, an old and respected member of tho council, •who died recently as tho result of a motor accident. A resolution of sympathy was passed by a silent vote, tho councillors standing. A similar "vote was passed to Mr Robert Brown and family on the death of their eon, Daniel Brown, who was killed in action at tho front. The County Ranger reported that dnrcng the month 12 head of cattle and four horses found straying in the county had been impounded.—Received. The County Inspector (Mr MTWilliams) reported that general maintenance work had been carried out during the month,-— Received. Sir Joseph Ward telegraphed the seaeon's greetings to the council, and expressed the hope that the year 1918 would Bee peace restored with a pronounced victory for the Allies.—Received; the Minister of Finance to be informed that his good wishes were reciprocated. The Public Works Department advised tho council that a subsidy of £200 on a ponnd-for-ponnd basis had been granted for metalling the Dunback-Macraes road.—Received; tenders for tho work not to bo invited until March. The Collector of Customs, Dimedin, notified the council that the extract from the gold declaration lodged with him for tho Waihemo County for tho month*of November was 330z, and that for tho month of December was 40oz.—Received.

The council decided to erect a signpost at Fleming's Corner stating that the Horse Range road "wae now in good order for motor traffic in fine weather. It was also decided that tho Otago Motor Association be advised of this fact Accounts amounting to £258 were passed for payment.
