— The man who holds the record for having refused a bigger salary than any other individual ie Herr Ballin, tho German shipbuilder, who recently fell into disgrace with the "All Highest." Some 10 years ago Mr Piernont Morgan offered Ballin a salary of £500,000 a year if he would assume control of the newly-formed Shipping Trust. The Kaiser forbade him to accept tho post, so tho matter fell through. .The Association of the North and South Island Grain Merchants, sitting in Wellington, took up the question of checking tho weight of gram on the railways, as shown by tho department's weighbridges. The association (says the New Zealand Times! urged the department no longer to take up the position that the weights are purely for railway purposes, and to that end tho denartment should do something to make them more accurate. „ The merchants would pay tho extra cost if such were necessitated. Another request in tho same connection was that more care should bo taken in ascertaining the tare of the trucks, and that while a truck is being , unloaded the chains and couplings ibe unhooked and the trucks stand by themselves instead of being joined to others. Mr M'Villy, Assistant GenoraJ Manager of the Railways, who was present at, tho meeting by invitation, promised to place the viows of tho association before the general manager for consideration.
