Lieutenant Hubert Philip Solomon, H.F.C.,' who was killed in action on the 19th , Octo- . her, was l>orn in Dunedin, and educated at Wellington College. He was well known : throughout the dominion as a commercial traveller, and before enlisting in the N./S.KF. in 1915 liad an indent agency in Clrristchtirch. lie saw .service in Egypt, and ?,'oing to England aiout October, 1916, got Jiia commission in the K.F.C. Two months later ho went to France us a pilot, and re- " niained there until April of this year,, when lie was appointed instructor in night flying in England. He was killed on the nighb of the' 10th of October while attacking a. j Zeppelin raiding tip oast of England, and was buried with military honours at Gainsborough. He ha 3 a brother, a- sergeant ill j the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Captain Noel John Hay G-avin, R.A.M.C., I M.C., and bar (Wellington), who died in France on the first of .November, met his ~ death as Uμ result of an accident. It ia understood that on the night of November 1, ; while riding up to the trenches along a , wooden road, his horse took fright, bolted, slipped and. fell, throwing- Captain Gavin ott to hia head and fracturing- his akull. Hβ died very shortly after reaching No. •21 Casualty Clearing Station, and he was buried! next day in. the local cemetery. Captain Gavin had boon ia England on leave, and . had only been back in France a few days before he met his death. It was while ia England on this last occasion that he received a bar to his Military Cross. Abraham, M.C., Manchester *, Regiment, the eldest son of the late Rev. ( | T. P. Abraham, rector of Risby, Suffolk, was killed in action on October 2'2, at the ago of 32. At one time Captain Abraham was farming in New Zealand, and he left the , dominion to take up land in Vagros Island, ~_ B.C. On the declaration of war he left his farm and joined the Canadian infantry as ai private-, so that he 3aw eervico very early in 1915. At the first battle of Ypres ha was badly gassed. Re-covering, he returned!.' to the front, remaining there until he was commissioned to the 3rd Manchester Begi- ' ment. In Juno of this year he was awarded, the Military Cross, the nest month he re-' ceived his first promotion*, and his captaincy was bestowed on liim ten days before he was killed. Ai the beginning of this year Captain Abraham married Miss Ruth. Robinson, daughter of Lieutenant-colonel M. Robinson, C.M.G., late commanding officer of the Cape Mounted Police, South Africa.

Second Lieutenant P. E. Frankau, Rifloi Brigade, killed in action while attached to . tho Cameronians, was the second son of the lato "Fxa-nk Danby," the novelist. In 1911 he married Miss Francis Ulica de Burgh Miller, of Te Puke, N.Z.. liarly in his life Lieutenant Frankau gave up hJs scholastic career in order to dovotc himself to farming and exploration. Ho had travelled considerably, and finally had settled in Rhodesia, enlisting at the outbreak of the war in the Ithodesian Contingent,. Ho obtained his commission in April, 1915.

Corporal Neil Jl'Leodi Matbeeon, reported died of wounds, was the youngest son of Mr and Mre G. S. Matheson, Tyne i street, Roslyn. "Pat," as he was familiarly known, was educated at the Kaikorai School, and for several years was a clerk in th-e Railway Department at various Otago and Southland <■ stations. Corporal Matheson took a great interest in dtefence matters, and was an eathusiastio member of the Railway Engineers, in which he held commissioned rank. He went to Samoa with the advance- party, and, being invalided back, it waa some time before, he wae again fit for active service, -bufc eventually he got away with the 25th Re-,. inforoe-ments about nine months ago.
