"SHIRKERS."
Sin, —Conscription, having become the law of tho land, and /every' eligible man being ■ liable to be called up under it, is it fair to assume that a, man is a "shirker" who does not volunteer before he is called up, but is quite willing to take his place at the front when required. I ask your opinion, because I have heard eligible men designated "shirkers" who, for valid reasons, have heldi back, while-1 have heard, hysterical youths, without responsibility of experience, and in their teens., designated "patriots" •'because- they have offered their services, ignorant of what they are undertaking. Has, it yet been proved that "patriots" (so called) are better-soldiers than so-called "shirkers?"—l am, etc., M. H. B. [A great many men have had- valid reason in their domestic and financial responsibilities for waiting "until the call to service has como to them. It would be an abuse of the, twm to deeignato them as "shirkers."— Ed. O.D.T.]
