One of the 'illustrated articles on- war themes in the August _ 'number of the Windsor Magazine is an important contribution to the present problems arising out of the perils to shipping of mines, as well as that of the submarine and tho" illustrations which accompany this article have a really instructive value for, those who seek to understand the subject. There also appears an article on "Signals," as Hie communications of an army, and another contribution deals with the history of both words and- musio of the National Anthem and other patriotic songs of the United States. In an interesting series of reproductions of pictures from Shakespeare are the ',: beantiful "Rosalind and Celia in the Forest" of Milkis, George Romney's charmingly imaginative picture from the first act of "Tho Tempest," Sir John Gilbert's notable water-colour, "Shylock, Salanio and Salarino,,, besides many other pictures by various artists which have been inspired by ' '*The Merry Wives of Windsor," "Much Ado About Notlrng," "Twelfth Night," ond the other comedies. A finely printed plate in colours reproduces Mr _ Charles Buchel's excellent piece of comedy in paint, "Touchstono and Audrey/' The fiction includes stories by well-known authors, and . a wealth of clover blaok-and-whito art ie devoted to the illustrations. The September number is also up to the usual standard of excellence. A good deal of _ space is devoted to articles connected with the; war, and a number of contributions by wellknown writers are well worth perusal.
