Constable Turner, stationed at Anderson Bay, has been transferred to Orepuki. Mrs Johnston Toplis, who has been singing with great success at Auckland during the past three months, has returned to Dunedin.

Dr Guthrie, president of the Dunedin Medical Board, is still unwell and unablo to attend to his duties, but is making good progress towards recovery. Dr O'Sullivan has resigned hie position as house surgeon at tho Dunedin Hospital in order to take up the position of assistant to the professors of bacteriology and pathology. A Press Association message states that the Auckland University Professorial Board has selected Second Lieutenant N. A. Jory, of the Thirty-fourth Reinforcements, as a candidate for the next Rhodes scholarship.

Miss Burt, hon. secretary of the Otago Women's Patriotic Association, is accompanying her father on a trip to Auckland. The duties of the secretaryship havo been arranged for durinir her absence. Uaptain O. P. M'Guigan, assistant director of equipment and ordnance stores, has returned to Dunedin after a refresher course in ordnance at Featherston, and has resumed duty at the headquarters office. A cablegram published on Monday stated that Captain Paul Barker, of the Royal Artillery, late of Waihi, had been killed in antion. The Waihi correspondent of tho Auckland Star states that Captain Paul Barker is not known in the Waihi goldfields district.

A Press Association telegram from Wellington states' that the Governor-general has received the following message from Princess Christian in reply' to a telegram of condolence which his Excellency transmitted to her Royal Highness through the Secretary of State for the Colonies: "Pray accept my 6incere thanks and convey to tho Government and people of New Zealand my profound appreciation of their sympathy."

A Press Association message from Wellington states that satisfactory news has been received regarding the health of Mr W. Downie Stewart, M.P., who returned to this country from the front about a year ago, suffering from acirfo rheumatism. Soon after the opening of the parliamentary session he went to Sydney to consult a specialist and undergo a course of treatment. In his most recent letters he has stated that he has had this treatment, and that he is improved in health as there, mt of it.

Aftei being medical superintendent of the Waimate Hospital for 25 years, Dr Barclay resigned his position on Wednesday (says the Christchurch Press). Dr Barclay, who holds the rank of Lieutenant-colonel in the R.A.M.C., is now in England. • When war was declared ho was in Tokio, en route to Great Britain, on 18 months' leavo of absence. Since his locum tenens, Dr Gillies Borrie, left for the front, Dr Barclay's hospital position has been kept going by Drs Hayes (now also at the front). Pitts, and Margaret Cruickshank. The Hospital Comn.ittee resolved to postpone consideration of thfl resignation till next meeting. The Southland Times reports the death, on Thursday, of ,Mr John Patterson, accountant in the post office. The deceased was born at Tapanui in 1868, being the younger son of Mr John Patterson, the wpll-known miller. He joined the post office staff in Oamaru in 1885, and was stationed there until 1913, when ho was promoted to Invercargill. In his youth deceased was a prominent member of the Oamaru Football Club, and in later years was an enthusiastic bowler, being president of the PhoMifx Club for three years. Tho late Mr Patterson ioined Te Rangi Club on going to Invercargill. He leaves a wife and daughter, and a son -who is at present on active service.
