GOING TO THE FRONT.

At the Harbour Board offices on the Bth inst. the staff met to bid goodbyo to Corporal Baxter Lowson, who will leave New Zealand with the Thirty-first Reinforcements. Mr W. J. Bardsley, in making a small presentation, referred to the necessity for individual sacrifice if the war was to be brought to a successful close. Other members of the staff spoke in high appreciation of Mr Lowßon, and all jointd in wishing him a safe and speedy return Prior to his departure from St. Bathans, Dγ Griffin, who is home on final leave from Tfentham, was entertained at a social in M'Devitt's Hall, and presented with a puise of sovereigns by the residents of St. Bathans and the surrounding districts. Mr O'Regan (chairman of the St. Batbane Medical Club) presided, and spoke in eulogistic terms of the guest of the evening,. making special reference to his professional skill, his unremitting care and attention to his patients, and hie courtesy to all. Messrs Dundass, Morgan, M'Carthy, and Nicolson also spoke in glowing terms of Dr Griffin, and wished him a speedy and safe return. Dr Griffin briefly resnonded, and thanked those present for their gift, attendance, and good wishes. PATEIOTIC 'RECITAL. In the Burns Hall on Saturday evening next a vocal and pianoforte recital will be given by Misses Natalina M'Callum and Ruby Harraway, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to the funds of the Otago Women's Patriotic Association and the Red Cross. An excellent programme has been prepared, and, as tickets have been selling freely, it is anticipated that this effort in a worthy cause will prove a great success. The box plans will be opened at the Bristol at 9 a.m. on Monday/ • OVERSEAS CLUB. Another week of steady work has to be recorded, during which members have completed many warm garments for sick and wounded men in England. Several cases of soldiers' comforts have been packed, and a quantity of clothing from the country districts has been received for those in need. Donations have been received from Mrs Cravor, A Friend, Oates street (Roslyn), Mutual Stores. Books: Mr Frew, Oban Hotel. GREEN ISLAM) WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION. There was a fair attendance at the rooms on Wednesday afternoon, when 49 service bags. 12 tea towels, and 19 pairs of socks were handed in. Tho school quota was 12 housewifes, 15 service bags, 35 handkerchiefs, 2 pairs socks. Several little girls and boys—Misses Tui and Fairy Harraway, Carrutliers, Nancy and Chatty Orr, Masters Wynn Taylor and Smellic—collected £1 11s 6d on Guy Fawkes Day, which they handed in for the soldiers. The following donations are thankfuly acknowledged.—Miss Kirkland, Mrs P. Smellie, Mrs A. R. Harrison, Mrs J. B. Falconer, Mrs R. Thompson, Mr P. Thompson, Mr Stewart proceeds of social (£2 7s). Petrol cases are urgently needed. Mr 3 Knrr, sen., an old lady, has completed her 184 th pair of hand-knitted socks.

CAYERSHAM -NURSING DIVISION. A special meeting of tho above was held on Monday evening to close the season, also to send the usual monthly parcel ol goods to the Red Cross Centre, consisting of 12 pyjama suits, 6 under flannels, 6 paire day socks, 26 manytail bandages, and 100 swabs. TAIEIU WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION. Tho monthly business meeting was well attended on Tuesday, Mrs Quolch presiding. The sum. of £10 was passed to the Dominion Parcels Fund. The monthly subscriptions were received, also 18s lid collooted by the children on Guy Fawkes Day for Wounded soldiers and Red Gross funds. The following goods wero packed: For Red Cross work —7 pairs slippers, 1 dozea scarves, and 1 bed jacket. For the equipment scheme—l 7 dozen handkerchiefs, 6 dozen service bags, 4 dozen r>airs_ socks, 1 dozen balaclavas, lj dozen undcrshirte, and 1 dozen day ehirts. Wylio's Crossing , school children hemmed half a dozen handkerchiefs and knitted some socks, and theso wcro also handed in. WEST TAIERI WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION. The West Taieri branch of the Women's Patriotic Association is working every Wednesday at the Drill Hall, Ontrahi. This wedk a box of goods was sent to the Early Settlers' Hall, containing dozen service bags, 52 wrappers, and 135 handkerchiefs. SEACLIFF PATRIOTIC ASSOCIATION. At the monthly meeting it was decided to assist the bowlers to raise £1000 for patriotic funds. Tho followi-'p were sent to the Early Settlers' Hall: 6 shirts, 135 handkerchiefs, 12 houscwifcs, 16 flannels, 22 balaclavas, 55 pairs socke, 89 servico bags. On Tuesday evening the members assisted tho Soncliff, Returned Soldiers' Welfare Association at a social in honour of W. R. Robson. H H. Keen, and C. H. Graham.
