PAY AND ALLOWANCES

MOTOR PATROL AND NAVY.

POSITION OP NEW ZEALANDERS.

(Feom Oun Own Cobbespondknt.) WELLINGTON, October 30. The pay and allowances to New Zealand members of the motor patrol service came before the House of Representatives this morning, when Mr Wright asked the Minister of Defence whether the Cabinet had oomo to any decision in regard to the mattor. The single men, he eaid, were not receiving tho difference between* their pay and that earned by New Zealand soldier& He also asked if financial aid,was given to tho married men. Sir James Allen etated that provision had been made so far as pensions were concerned. The matter had been carefully considered, and the Government could not go any further than that. Provision had already been made for the wives and children in order to bring their allowances -up to tho New Zealand rate, but the Government could not see its way to bring the pay of single men up to tho New Zealand rate or to provide for assistance from the Financial Assistance Board. If it did,' it would have to grant the earao privilege to all New Zealanders serving with other than the dominion forces, and it could not do that. Mr Poolc asked whether, in view of the fact that some engineers and other officers whoso wi-vos and families resided in New Zealand joined the British navy when strong overtures were mado for some additional men, tho Minister of Defence would tako into consideration the treating of the wives and children of theec men tho same as tho' wives and children of the men in the motor patrol service. . ; Sir James Allen said theso men did not come witTiin ths same category as those in the moior patrol service, who enlisted in Now Zoaland.with tho eon-jent of the New Zealand Government. If there were only a few of them ono might broak a rule.

Mr Poole: There are only a few

Sir .Tames Allen: If yon onee extend the privilege you at once open the door. Tho mattw , will have- careful consideration, however.
