The latest , survey of the conditions in which oil production in tho Wolgan Valley (N.S.W.) is being carried on repeats in substance the story of many other industries in Australia. Newnes is now tinder highly skilled management. The shale deposits are among the finest in the .world. There is an immense plant to work them, capable of producing up to 30,000 gallons of oil a day. Australia badly nee'ds the oil. There is a great permanent and profitable market for it. Yet, according to an investigation made by 'the Sydney Morning Herald, the industry may have to close down unless the State comes to its assistance, chiefly owing to the effects upon it of " crippjing labour conditions and demands."
