DISCHARGED FROM CAMP

(Fbom Otte Own Coheesponbent.) WELLINGTON, September 7. A return presented to the House of Representatives by Sir James Allen to-day gave the following number of men who, having passed the Medical ' Board, havo entered camp in New Zealand as members of various reinforeeniente and havo afterwards boon discharged from camp as unfit for service:— Twenty-second Reinforcements, 2; 23rd, 8; 24th, 31: 25th, 49; 25th, 195; 27th, 153; 28th, 136; 29th, 104; 30th, 79; 31st, 27; 32nd, 15.; 33rd, 11; 34th, 2; 35th, 3;— total, 815. ■ ■ Sir James Allen explained that tho high figures for the Twenty-sixth, Twenty-seventh, and Twenty-eighth Reinforcements wero due to the fact that about that time an alteration was made in the standard ( of examination at the suggestion of the Imperial authorities. Since then we had reverted to our own methods, and the number discharged as unfit had been very largely reduced.

GOING TO THE FRONT

Private Wm. Wilson, of the 32nd Reinforcements (Mounted Machine Gun Section), being home on final leave, was entertained at a social evening at Lar/,der on Tuesday. Private Wilson was presented by Mr G. A. Francis, on behalf of the people of the district, with a wristlet watch and puree of sovereigns. Messrs Sheppard, Alexander, Howjohn, and Gallagher spoko of Private _ Wilson's many sterling qualities, and wished him God-speed and a safe return.

MEN FOR HOME SERVICE

Two men were sent fK>m Dunedin yesterday bound for .the Awapuni Camp for home service—namely, A, Smith, and E. Crooks.

ANOMALIES OF THE BALLOT

Francis David Thomson (Pembroke) volunteered in October, 1916, but was rejected. Thomas Ritchie (slaughterman, Concord) went into camp with the 30th Reinforcements, but was rejected at Trentharn. Daniel Welsh Morgan (Papatowai) volunteered in 1916, and was rejected.

OVERSEAS CLUB

The following are gratefully acknowledged:—Pupils of Kaikorai School (parcels for lonely soldiers), -Stirling, A Friend, and Madame Dambly (clothing), Mrs Harris, Oantrell, Loudon, Soldiers' Friend (money). The club forwarded 22 cases of soldiers' parcels from residents of Milton to their boys at the front. The committee will be making up and packing Christmas parcels on Wednesday, and hopes that workers will help. Any one who would like to send a parcel to any lonely soldier can leave it at the club , room in the Octagon Tea Rooms.

GREEN ISLAND WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION.

At tho weekly meeting on Wednesday, 144 tea towels, 4 muslin shirts, 2 flannel undershirts, 12 housewifes, 24 service bags, 12 pairs of sodks, and 8 balaclava caps were handed in. The following gave donations :—Mrs Peter Smellie, Mrs A. x<.. Harrison, Mrs J. B. Falconer, Miss Reid, Miss Nuia Reid, Mr P. Thompson, Mrs R. Thompson, Mrs R. Hall, Maisio Duncan, Mrs Brockie. '

ST. JOSEPH'S RED CROSS AND PATRIOTIC GUILD.

A busy afternoon was spent in the rooms, Rattray street,, a good bundle of garments being completed for the Red Cross. For those who cannot come to the rooms to work, there is a supply of material for making-up at home.
