" The, monthly meeting of the Cavcrsham School Cominitteo was held on Monday evening. Mr J. Brown presided. A circular was received from the Educational Institute regarding the early closing of hotel bars, and a motion was carried expressing the committee's sympathy with the movement. The inspector's report was before the meeting, and it was decided to congratulate Mr Hardy and his staff on the excellence of it. Messrs Kennard and Melville reported having vis'ted the school and found the work proceeding very satisfactorily. A, Dumber of repairs required were authorised. It was decided to invite subscriptions from the children on behalf of the sufferers in the recent air raid on London, whereby a number of school children lost their lives, while others were badly maimed. It was dccided to close the school for the term holidays during the first week in September. Accounts amounting to £14 2s 5d were passed! for payment. The Women's 'Christian Temperance Union will hold a meeting for women in the Burns Hall on Saturday in the interests of social morality on similar lines to those of the meetinsr held last week under the auspices of the Christian Council. It feels strongly that the sentences passed on the criminals who were recently before the court were wholly inadequate, and that the revelation of the immorality prevalent in the city demands that suecial methods bo adopted. Mrs Hiett (president of the W.C.T.TT.) will occupy the chair, and among the speakers will be Dr Doris Gordon, Mrs L'ndo Ferguson, Mrs Peryman and Mrs Driver. Admission will be free' but a collection will be made to meet the expenses. The monthly meeting of the Membership Committee of the Otago Expansion League was held last n'ght, Mr George Crow in the chair. Consideration .of several points ir connonfcion with the forfucoming annual meeting was the- first business, and thereafter the balance sheet for presentation to.; the executive meeting was received and adopted.
