ORPHANS' CLUB
Tho Orphans' Club held a special " hardup night m the Waratah Tea Eooms last evening. The president (Mr G. W. M'lntosh) presided. There was a large attendance, and as tho majority attended in hard-up- costumes of various designs and different degijees of apparent poverty, the scene presented was a strange and amusin o, one. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes as follow :-Bro. H. Russell (dead beat) 1 Bro. G. Wycherley (war correspondent) 2, Bros. J. M Connell and T W Dobbie (old man and boy) 3. A good pro* gramme of musical items was presented and proved most enjoyable to those present. Several selections by the orchestra were especially appreciated. The following contributed to the programme: —Songs—Bros. ri? ? 0 ' Hart, J. M'Connell. and Mr F. Taylor; recitations—Bros. H. Russell, S H Osborn, J. B. M'Connell, G. Wycherley" and Captain Stevens; violin solo, Bro. Clark' An amusing feature of the evening was the parade of all the " dead beats" after a liard-up n supper had been dispensed.
