THE BIRTH OF A NATION

The magnitude of Mr D. W. Griffith's feat in staging " The Birth of a Nation" is almost appalling, at least to tho devotees of tho older theatre. Where now are the little groups of actors, the pinchbeck scenery, and the petty properties of the so-called "legitimate" drama? By comparison with the new aTt, th© " legitimate " is infinitesimal. In staging ''Tho Birth of a Nation " Mr Griffith used Nature for his background, 150 years of American history as his subject, 18,000 people as his actors .and no fewer than 3000 mounts of cavalry in the celebrated " rides" of the Klu Klux clan. This wonder spectacle will be shown, with all the unique musical setting and investiture of effects, at the Octagon Theatre on Saturday, and twice daily for the remainder of tho season.
