N SITTING AT ALEXANDRA, Tho Otago No. 1 Military Service Board eat at Alexandra on Friday afternoon; prosent—Messrs H. Y. Widdowson (chairman), A. D. Bell,, and E. Kollett. Captain Froo was tho military representative. Tho appeal of Allan Orombio (sheep farmer, Baimockburn), which had beon doferred until the end of_ tho First Division, and for whom Mr Bodlcin appeared, was reopened, several documents relating to the appellant's position being placed before ttio board. Captain Freo said he had no suggestion to mako in regard to the case. — the appellant said ho would like to remain until the shearing was over.—Adjourned for two months in order that further inquiries might bo made. C. J. Gallagher's appeal on behalf of his son. William J. Gallagher (blacksmith, Outram), which had also been adjourned until tho end of the First Division, was reviewed.—Mr Bodkin appeared for the reservists who was in attendance. A certificate from Dr Gladstono was handed in, stating that tho reservist suffered from chronic bronchitis.—Tho appeal was adjourned for_ a month to enable the man to be re-examined _ and also to mako further inquiries regarding his position. James Tait (fruitgrower, Cromwell), whoso appeal had been adjourned sine dio, intimated that ho was now prepared to go. — Tho board decidod that he should not be called up before the October draft. William R. M'Kean (solicitor, Clyde), whose appeal had been previously adjourned to enable him to bo mcdically examined, stated that he had- not yet been examined. If ho were passed as fit ho would be prepared to go in November.—Adjourned for a month. Thomas M'Nulty (oarrier and , coal merchant, Cromwell) again appeared before the board, his appeal having been previously adjourned sino die. —Mr Bodkin represented the appellant, who stated that ho had tried to get rid of his team and his business, but had not succeeded.—Appeal dismissed, reservist not to bo called up until the October draft. The adjourned appeal of James A. T. Steel (fruit grower, Clyde), who had previously stated that he was willing to go at tho end of the First Division, was re-opened. The appellant stated that the position had not altered, but ho was willing to go in October. His father, however, could not look after his property.—Granted till the October draft. John White (contractor, Omakau), whose appeal had been deferred until the end of the First Division, was again before the board.—The Chairman: Your business does not seem to stand in your way now. —The appellant: No, I am prepared to go if I can get a little timo, say two months. I would, however, need something' in the way of financial assistance.—Tho reservist was granted the time for which ho asked, and the appeal was adjourned for a month in order to make inquiries regarding financial macters. _ i Tho adjourned appeal of William H.. Ballantyno (sheep farmer, Tarras) came up for further consideration.—ln reply to Captain Freo the appellant stated that besides a brother at the front he had one in Dunedin. His father had a farm of about 400 acres, but it would be awkward for him to look after the appellant's property, as ho was too far away.—Captain Free: We have to do a great many awkward thing's in these days.—The appellant added, in reply to the chairman, that both he and his brother had volunteered and had been turned down.—The case was deferred for further inquiry. The appeal of Henry Thomas Bell (a carrior between Clyde and Tarras), who had asked for exemption on the promids of public interest and undue hardship, was further considered.—Mr M'Kean appeared for the appellant, and stated that the fanners concerned had endeavoured to arrange for taking over this man's team, but thiß had proved impracticable, as one of the roads was very dangerous. In addition, he could sell his horses only at a very heavy sacrifice.—Tho Chairman: It looks as though evoryone will have to cart his own wool next season.—To Captain Free: BGa brother had given up his own carting business and taken up farming.—Captain Free: Why oould you not give up your team, then, and go and fight?— The Chairman: Your brother could have taken over your team, could ho not?— Appellant: Ho won't do it. —Appeal dismissed, reservist not to bo called up before the October draft. Alfred S. Tamblyn (carrier, farm labourer, and coal merchant, Fruitlands) asked for throe months' time in order to sell his horses and arrange his affaira. He had one brother in the First, Division, who had enlisted, but ho had been invalided home and was unable to look after tho appellant's plant.—Mr Bodkin, who appeared, handed in several documents to the board, showing ' that the appellant had one or two contracts ■ in hand, which would take a few months s t° complete.—The appellant stated that he < could dispose of his teams at present only 1 at a heavy loss.—Tho appeal w&s dismissed, ' the appellant not to be called up until tho !
