THE CLTJTHA LAND ASSESSMENT COURT. TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —My letter which appeared in your issue of Tuesday last in a condensed form, commenting on the proceedings of the Land Assessment Court of Ckitha, did not in that form convey the full meaning I desired it to have. The land valuations in many cases were unduly high, while the action of the court was considered to be far from being impartial. One objector, under cross-examina-tion, agreed to sell his farm to the Government for £1600, while the valuation placed on it wae £2545. Another' objector was ridiculed for declaring , his farm was not for sale. At a'subsequent stage the farmer who agreed to sell was asked if he still held to his offer to selL His reply was in the affirmative, but that the Government would have to take action at once, as he could ( not keep the offer long open. For this re-' *ply-the magistrate charged the witness with equivocating, and toM him to remember that he was on oath, and had sworn and signed an agreement to sell his farm to the Government.—l etc., J.
