ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
(PES DNITED PKEBB ABSOC3IATIOS.) HOKITIKA, July 25. A young lad, a son of Mr Herman Osmers, manager of tho Mount Greenland claim, fell over a siding and was seriously injured. He was carried on a stretcher for nine miles. He was badly bruised, and received other injuries. Two men narrowly escaped drowning at the mouth of the Waitaha River when crossing it m a dray. Their horse was drowned, and it and the dray were washed away. They have not been recovered.
Mr T. A, B. Bailey held an inquest at Leeston on Saturday into the circumstances surrounding the death of James Brewster an ex-jockey, who was killed bv a fall from a horse on Friday evening. Brewster had been employed for the last six months as a general hand by Mr P. Smith, licensee of the Leeston Hotel. The Rev. W. Laycock stated that he saw Brewster on horseback riding at a furious rate. When approaching a bridge the horse swerved, and Brewster fell heavily over tho animal's shoulder Brewster died within a few minutes. Dr Withers gavo evidence to the effect that death had been caused by a fractured spine, and the coroner returned a verdict accortTingly.
