BATTLE OF MESSLNES

AN UNPOPULAR WORD.

(Fbom Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, July 25. ;Mr Malcolm to-day read a newspaper report of an interview in London with a general, giving the Australians the credit for the capture of Messines. He said that without reflecting upon the Australians, he understood the New Zealanders were responsible for the principal work. He objected to the term Australasian including New Zealanders. The Prime Minister agreed with Mr Malcolm in regard to the term Australasian. It was a long ugly word, and he was prepared to hear any suggestion for a substitute Prior to leaving London he had been informed that the New Zealanders would take Messines and get the credit for it, and he thought that when the full report came to hand it would be found that the New Zealanders took the leading part, even if they did not do the whole of the work.
