Sir Douglas Haig reports : We successfully raided westward of Havrincourt, eastward of Vermelles, and westward of Hollebeke. "VIOLENT ARTILLERY BOMBARDMENT. FRENCH REPEL GERMANS. LONDON, July 24. A French communique reports a violent bombardment in the region north-west of Bray en Laonnais. Two enemy attacks were repulsed with heavy losses. Another attack between Cerny and Ailles failed. The violent artillery struggle continues in the sector before Craonne, notably on ' the California Plateau. ON THE FLANDERS FRONT. GERMAN VERTICAL BARRAGE. Renter's Telegrams. PARIS, July 24. The tremendous artillery battle continues on the Flanders front. The Gerare employing a vertical barrage, forming a wall of steel 300 metres against the allied observation aeroplanes. Marcel Hntin states that the German batteries from the coast to the Scarpe have been largely reinforced, also their aerial squadrons. The enemy's thrusts are increasing. The French reattached unsuccessfully at Chemin des Dames. We have repulsed 21 French attacks during the past few days. We penetrated Caurieres Wood and inflicted heavy losses. BRILLIANT FRENCH • COUNTER-ATTACK. GERMANS THROWN OUT OF CASEMATES. FRENCH LINE ADVANCED. Australian and N.Z. (Received Jury 25, at 9.5 p.m.) French communique: This morning wo vigorously counter-attacked the enemy who, since the hard fighting of the 22nd have occupied the first line of trenches on the casemates of California Plateau The attack was carried out with extraordinary dash and gave brilliant results. Despite a desperate defence, our soldiers recaptured the whole of the lost ground on the California Plateau except a small work which was completely destroyed in the north-west salient, and which both sides abandoned. We threw out the enemy on the casemates from all t)he elements held and even advanced our line at several points. German counter-attacks launched on the reconquered trenches were wihollv unsuccessful. J The artillery duel is extremely active in the Champagne and on the left bank of tho Mouse.
