BENZINE EXPLOSION
A NARROW ESCAPE. CPsb n*rnn Pars* Arsociattok.J WELLINGTON, July 24. A startling- accidc-nt occurred on the steamer Breeze whilo berthed' at King's wharf yesterday afternoon. About 9000 cases of benzine had been taken aboard, t and . the third engineer (W. Ullrioh) was miking' an examination in the propeller shaft tunnel with a naked light, when, apparently, benzine fumes ignited, caus : a violent exp' sion. Ullrich was blown through from tho tunnel to the engine room, _ where the crew found him lying, His hair singed off, and his faoe and arms severely- burned. He was sent to the hospital. The officials consider it'a marvel that the vessel was not blown op. It is surTLised that some caees were leaking, and he wondser is_ that the flame, of the explo» iion did not ignite these.
