Sergeant Ji y. M. Canty, •who has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry .at, the battle, of Messines, is an old boy of Kilbirnie School, Wellington, where he excelled in shooting and cricket Afterwards at Wellington College he "became the crack shot of the school: He twice represented New; Zealand in' the Earl JRoberts Trophy Competition, and. on one of these occasions topped the score for the dominion. One remarka-ble.performance by,him was the registering of five, shots inside a one-inch bull's: eye at 100 yards. He left with the Samoan Expedition at the outbreak of the war, arid on his return to New Zealand joined Lord Liverpool's, Own. This brigade made a successful raid on the Seniissii. in Egyofc,; and was afterwards engaged' in' the, fighting on the Somme and around Arras.
